It should be E. let us diagnose the problem.
the subject is notion and not "our happiness or our suffering" this seems to be a camouflage
so the sentence is just like this The notion that X depends....
using we are left with B & E. "upon us" is wrong.

I think answer should be D, though i am not sure. My reasoning is that "based on" is the correct idiom.
please post the correct answer. and also some of the teachers please help to explain this.

hence we need ''depends'' that helsp us eliminate C ( which is special as it goes sufferings and depend) A n D... 

as regards C we don have to change the original part as it goes ... 

between B and e... 

b IS THE BETTER PICK... 

''we depend on ourselves'' 

''some thing else depends on US' 

so her X and Y depend upon US...
