C, verb tenses. First removed and then learned. Past perfect is imperative. Though I think it would also be correct without a "had" as "before " is mentioned to explain the timeline. Do correct me if I am wrong.

A synthetic stuff cannot come from a natural source, i.e human cadavers. This consideration eliminates choices A, B, and D. And choice E is nonsensical as the modifier before the comma that modifies "it" (which is placed immediately after the comma) suggests that 'it', which refers to the hormone itself, learned how to make the hormone.
