Is it practical for one to aim for an October Exam provided the preps have just started? Or should I be more realistic and appear for the exam later?

Aanant is right. Take a gmat diagnostic test from official guide or a full fledged CAT on gmatprep. Evaluate your score and then plan accordingly. There are a few online courses which make your preparation easy, such as, e-GMAT for SC and CR. Magoosh and Cracku for quant. For anyone using these courses, it should take 3 to 4 months to be ready for the test. October is a lot of time added you are determined. :-)

You have more than sufficient time. GMAT prep must not be stretched for more than 3 months.

I'm even in the same situation . October month is perfect to give exam if one has started preparing just now

I am very thankful to Gmatxchange and would definitely recommend Gmatxchange mentors to all those students applying for MBA admissions
